How to Update CD/DVD Drivers

Your computer's CD or DVD drive has a driver, which is a special piece of software that tells the device how to communicate and work with Windows. Sometimes, the company that makes your CD or DVD drive will release a software update if there is a problem with the drive. They may also update it to make it work better in general. Either way, it is up to you to update your CD or DVD drive.



Instructions

Click on "Start > Control Panel > System and Maintenance > Device Manager."

Find your CD or DVD drive in the list of devices that are currently installed on your computer. When you find it, right-click on it, and select "Update Driver."

Select the dot next to the words "Yes, this time only" when Windows asks you for permission to connect to Windows Update to find an update for your device. Then, click on the "Next" button.

Select the dot next to the words "Install software automatically," and click the "Next" button. Then, wait while Windows connects to Windows Update and finds the updated driver for your DVD or CD drive. It will then download and install that software automatically and ask you for permission to restart your computer.

Click on the "Restart now" button that Windows provides you, and when you log back into Windows, your CD or DVD drive will be updated.
