Removing the DVD player from your Dell Inspiron desktop or Dell Inspiron laptop is necessary if you need to replace the DVD player or want to upgrade to a better one. Over time, some DVD players will simply wear out: the tray may occasionally eject discs much slower, the button to eject the disc tray may decide to stop working or discs that you play in the DVD player may start to skip as the sensor in the player gets older.
Instructions
Inspiron Laptop

Turn off the laptop and unplug any cables that are connected to the device.

Place the laptop upside down and turn the part of the laptop that opens up toward you.

Unscrew the screw with the padlock icon next to it with the Phillips screwdriver. The screw will be on the lower-left corner of your laptop, next to the DVD drive.

Using a flat head screwdriver, slide the notch next to the screw hole to the left to unlock your DVD drive. The DVD drive will pop out just a little bit.

Grab the DVD drive and pull it out of the DVD drive bay.
Inspiron Desktop

Turn the computer off and unplug any cables that are connected to the device.

Place the computer on a flat surface. With the front of the computer facing you, lay the computer on its right side. Turn the computer so that the back is facing you.

Unscrew the two thumbscrews on the top edge of the back of the computer.

Pull the cover back and remove it.

Turn the computer tower so that the front of the computer is facing you.

Lift the three latches just above the front panel of the computer that are attaching it to the computer. Swing the front panel away from the computer, then lift and remove it.

Unscrew the two screws on the side of the DVD drive inside the computer. The DVD drive will most likely be in the top media bay of the tower.

Unplug the two cables in the back of the DVD drive.

Pull the DVD drive out of its media bay slowly and lift it out of the computer.
Tips & Warnings
Do not remove the DVD drive in your laptop until you have another DVD or CD drive to replace it. This will prevent dust collecting in the empty media bay.
