How to Diagnose a CD/DVD Lens

If your computer's CD/DVD drive suddenly stops reading the discs that you put into it, the problem could be with your drive's lens. The lens is the component that reads the data on the disc using a laser. Any number of things could be causing this lens to malfunction, from an excess of dust on the inside of the drive to a problem with your drive's software -- called a driver.

Click "Start."

Click "Control Panel."

Click "Device Manager."

Look for the model number of your CD/DVD drive in the Device Manager window. Because there is a problem with your drive, a small yellow icon will be present to the left of its name. Right-click on the model number and click "Properties." The "Status" portion of the "Properties" window will tell you what is wrong with the software that controls your CD/DVD drive, and how that is affecting the unit's lens.

Diagnosing the Hardware

Press "Eject" to open the disc tray on your CD/DVD drive. This will give you access to the area on the inside of the drive where the lens is contained.

Clean the inside of your CD/DVD drive. You can either spray a can of compressed air gently inside the drive, or insert a specialized CD/DVD laser lens cleaning disc. Both of these devices are available at computer retailers.

Place a regular disc in the tray of your CD/DVD drive and close the tray. If Windows recognizes the disc, the problem with your lens was with excess dust and your drive is now fixed. If Windows fails to recognize the disc, the problem could lie with the disc or with the drive's software on your computer
