How to Install an External DVD Multi-Recorder

Using a DVD Multi-Recorder Drive has its advantages. You can burn videos in various formats, such as DVD-RW, CD-R and CD-RW. As a result, you don't have to worry about incompatibilities. Instructions

Why Do DVD Drives Regularly Fail?

Both CD and DVD optical drives have a tendency to fail quite frequently, and they usually fail more quickly than many other computer drives. There are several reasons for optical drive failure, including the way optical drives are made and used.

Moving Parts
Any piece of hardware with moving parts is generally more prone to failure than solid-state technology. A DVD drive has to turn constantly while discs are inside it at a high rate of speed and this will gradually damage the motor.

Handling
People have to handle DVDs when they place them in a drive, and in the process, they will often make the discs dirty. When dust and other debris get on a disc, it can easily be transferred into the drive. Gradually, this process will make the drive dirty, which can eventually cause it to fail.

Fragility
Optical drives are made with many tiny components and these are usually quite fragile. It doesn't take much to damage these parts and when they eventually fail, they can be very difficult to fix.

How to Save From a DVD to a Flash Drive

Every type of digital storage device, whether it's an external hard drive, CD, DVD, digital camera or flash drive, is identified as another drive by a letter designation in a PC's "Computer" window when it is attached. A PC's internal hard drive is almost always identified by the letter "C." Additional drives are given letters following "C." Because of the way computers assign drive letters to devices, saving from a DVD to a flash drive is as simple as copying from one place on the hard drive to another.

Instructions

Insert the DVD you want to save from into your DVD drive on the computer. Insert the flash drive into an available USB port. An "AutoPlay" window will pop up for both devices. The one for the flash drive will say "Removable Disk (X)" at the top, where X is the drive letter assigned to it. The one for the DVD will say some variation of "DVD Drive" at the top.

Click "Open folder to view files" in both AutoPlay windows. Click and hold on the top bar of each window and drag them around so you can see the contents of both windows.

Click the file or files in the DVD window and drag and drop them into the window for the flash drive. To select multiple files in a row, click on the first one and then "shift-click" on the last one, then drag and drop the whole group. For multiple files that aren't together, "ctrl-click" each file and then drag them as a group. When done, remove both devices from the computer and you have saved files from the DVD to the flash drive

Tips & Warnings
This will copy the file to the flash drive by default. If you want to move the file, taking off the DVD, hold down the "Ctrl" key while you drag and drop.

Whether you move the files, or copy and delete them from the DVD, make sure the files are usable on the flash drive. Files and devices can become corrupt; you don't want to delete your only working copy.

How to Configure a Nero DVD Burner

The Nero Burning ROM disc burning software allows you to configure your computer's DVD burner in such a way that only specific user accounts on your machine can access it. This is not done through the Nero program itself, but through a secondary program called Nero BurnRights. Nero BurnRights does not get installed on your machine during the installation process for Nero Burning ROM and all of its secondary utilities, like Nero Vision and Nero Recode. You will have to obtain it through the Nero website.

Instructions

Download the installation file for Nero BurnRights. Once the download is finished, double-click on the file to install the program on your computer.

Open Nero BurnRights by clicking on "Start", then "Programs," then "Nero Burning ROM," and then "Nero BurnRights."

Click on the "Info" tab to read information about your existing Nero Burning ROM installation and user settings.

Click on the "BurnRights" tab to configure who is allowed to access Nero Burning ROM. You can allow only the administrator account on your computer to access the program, every account to access the program or specific accounts to access the program.

Click on the "Extended Options" tab. This will allow you to further configure your user rights management, including which aspects of Nero a user account is allowed to use and which they are forbidden to access. You can also configure which accounts are allowed to change settings in Nero and which are not.

How to Clone a Hard Drive to DVD

Cloning your hard drive to a DVD is simple and requires that the size of your hard drive's contents be less than 4.7GB because that is the maximum size available on standard DVDs. This process can be achieved using native Windows burning software. If you have hard drive data larger than 4.7GB, you will need to divide the data up so that it can be burned in smaller increments.

How to Remove a DVD Player From a Dell Inspiron

Removing the DVD player from your Dell Inspiron desktop or Dell Inspiron laptop is necessary if you need to replace the DVD player or want to upgrade to a better one. Over time, some DVD players will simply wear out: the tray may occasionally eject discs much slower, the button to eject the disc tray may decide to stop working or discs that you play in the DVD player may start to skip as the sensor in the player gets older.

Instructions

Inspiron Laptop

Turn off the laptop and unplug any cables that are connected to the device.

Place the laptop upside down and turn the part of the laptop that opens up toward you.

Unscrew the screw with the padlock icon next to it with the Phillips screwdriver. The screw will be on the lower-left corner of your laptop, next to the DVD drive.

Using a flat head screwdriver, slide the notch next to the screw hole to the left to unlock your DVD drive. The DVD drive will pop out just a little bit.

Grab the DVD drive and pull it out of the DVD drive bay.

Inspiron Desktop

Turn the computer off and unplug any cables that are connected to the device.

Place the computer on a flat surface. With the front of the computer facing you, lay the computer on its right side. Turn the computer so that the back is facing you.

Unscrew the two thumbscrews on the top edge of the back of the computer.

Pull the cover back and remove it.

Turn the computer tower so that the front of the computer is facing you.

Lift the three latches just above the front panel of the computer that are attaching it to the computer. Swing the front panel away from the computer, then lift and remove it.

Unscrew the two screws on the side of the DVD drive inside the computer. The DVD drive will most likely be in the top media bay of the tower.

Unplug the two cables in the back of the DVD drive.

Pull the DVD drive out of its media bay slowly and lift it out of the computer.

Tips & Warnings
Do not remove the DVD drive in your laptop until you have another DVD or CD drive to replace it. This will prevent dust collecting in the empty media bay.
