Building a 3-volt LED night light isn't a time-consuming or expensive project, and can be completed in a relatively short 10 minutes or so. While buying a retail-grade night light guarantees you a certain amount of functionality and aesthetic quality, building your own can be a fun and rewarding experience--just by utilizing basic hobby electronics, materials and tools. A well-stocked hobby shop or electronics store will provide everything you need.
Instructions

Lay the transistor so that the three prongs extend downward and the flat side of the transistor faces you. The three prongs (in order from left to right) are the Emitter, Base and Collector.

Solder the resistor at a 90-degree angle between the Base and Collector prongs of the transistor. Clip off the excess resistor metal extending past the transistor's Base pin--as well as the extra metal of the Collector pin.
3.Solder the pin on the flat side of the phototransistor to the middle (Base) pin of the transistor. Clip off the excess base pin.

Solder the positive lead from the LED to the only unconnected transistor pin--the Emitter. Clip off the extra LED pin that goes beyond the soldered connection between the two.

Solder the LED's negative pin to the unconnected phototransistor pin, and leave the metal untrimmed.
You should now have two long leads (left) coming from your circuit--one end of the resistor and one LED/phototransistor lead.

Place the resistor-connected lead on the positive side of the coin-cell battery, and the LED/phototransistor-connected lead to the negative side.
In bright light nothing will happen. In darkness the phototransistor will detect a drop in light levels and activate the transistor, which will allow the battery to power the LED.
