How Digital TV Convertors Work
As of June 2009, the United States converted to digital television on nearly all stations. This TV format provides better quality and uses less bandwidth than traditional analog TV. However, older televisions can't read digital television signals. If you have a low-definition television made before the late 2000s, you need a digital TV converter to decode the new signals for viewing.
Conversion
Modern TV signals enter the conversion box from the antenna, before moving to the television itself. The converter box contains software that can decode digital signals into a format understandable by analog televisions. You can buy a converter as a standalone device for between $40 and $70, according to Consumer Reports and as of 2008. You can also buy a new DVD recorder or DVR that contains a digital tuner, then route antenna signals through the device. These devices cost around $200 as of the date of publication, due to their extra features. You need one converter device for each television or other analog device.
Compatible Televisions
Most recently-manufactured TVs don't need a digital converter. They already have conversion software included from the manufacturer. Only older CRT televisions, early HD-ready TVs and newer sets with no tuners, called "monitors," need a converter. If you don't know whether your set needs a converter, call the manufacturer or check your manual.
Quality
Digital-to-analog converter boxes don't provide the same quality that a newer TV with built-in digital conversion can. They must change the digital signal into an analog one, losing information along the way. A digital converter can't transmit high-definition video well. It also can't change a low-definition signal into a high-definition one. If you're concerned about viewing newer HD signals properly, upgrade to a modern TV set instead of using a converter.
Considerations
You may not need a digital converter box for your analog TV if you don't use an antenna. The Federal Communications Commission's digital requirement applies only to signals sent over the airwaves. Cable and satellite television may still arrive in analog format, though many broadcasters are switching to digital to conserve bandwidth and improve broadcast quality. The change to digital won't affect televisions' ability to interface with a VCR, DVD player, video camera, game console or other device.
