A homemade GPS (global positioning system) can be used to keep track of someone else's movements, or you can use it to help you navigate in unfamiliar areas. You can also use it as a tool to log your movement for the past 30 days. This way, you can retrace your steps if you have misplaced something. A homemade GPS system doesn't cost much to make. In fact, if you have a mobile phone that can access the Internet, then all you will need is a GPS software.
Instructions
1
Buy a mobile phone that has Internet capability. You can purchase one from online retailers such as Walmart, Buy, and Amazon. In 2010, a cell phone that can get Internet access costs about $100.
2
Decide on a mobile GPS tracking software. A few that are available include Google Maps for Mobile, AmazeGPS and Mologogo. As of 2010, these applications are all free of charge. All of these allow you to track your phone using a computer or other Internet enabled device. They also give you the ability to navigate from your phone.
3.Sign up with the service that you have chosen by going to their web site and entering a user name, password, cell phone number and email address. Wait for a text message, and once you receive it, go to the link provided. This takes you to a page where you can download the GPS software.
4
Download the GPS application to your phone, and click on the file to begin the installation. Once the installation has completed, restart the phone.
5
Navigate using the phone by going to the "Menu," and opening up the program. When it opens, you will see a map along with blinking dot denoting your location. As you move, the dot will move, letting you know where you are in relation to the map. If you want directions to a specific address, click on the "Search" tab at the top of the screen.
6
Track a person or vehicle by making sure that the GPS application is activated on your phone. Then go to the website where you registered, and log on. A map will appear, and on top of it you will see a blinking red dot with the GPS coordinates of the phone. You are provided with the longitude, latitude, speed and heading of the phone. You can also check the movement of the phone over the past 30 days by clicking on the "History" tab at the top.
7
Install the GPS in your car. Use a hands-free Bluetooth kit. This will allow you to connect your phone to your car's speakers, and to use your GPS phone hands-free. These also come with a cell phone holder, so that you can see the maps at eye level without having to hold the phone . If you get Google Maps for Mobile or AmazeGPS, you will be able to get turn-by-turn audio directions and use voice commands to operate your GPS.
