While Linux and Apple's Mac OS X come with the dd command, a versatile disk authoring utility, Windows lacks such functionality. When making a bootable USB flash drive from a CD image in Windows, you typically must extract the files, copy them to the USB drive, then make the drive bootable. This can be a hassle, with myriad issues making the creation of a bootable USB drive more challenging than necessary. Using the free utility UNetbootin, however, you can easily copy CD images from your Windows computer to a USB flash drive. Instructions 1 Download and install UNetbootin (see Resources). Download the disk image from the Internet or copy the image from a physical disk using a simple, one-click ISO creator like MagicISO or a software suite like Nero. Insert your flash drive into a USB port. Click "Ignore" or "Cancel" when the "What Would You Like To Do" dialog box pops up. 2 Launch UNetbootin from your "All Programs" menu. Click the radio button labeled "Disk Image" and select "ISO" from the adjacent drop-down box. Click the "..." button and select your Boot CD ISO image from your computer's hard drive (see Tips). 3.Click the drop-down box labeled "Drive" and select "USB Drive" from the list. Select the drive letter for your flash drive from the adjacent drop-down box (see Warnings). 4 Click "OK" in the lower right corner of the window to create your bootable USB drive from an ISO CD image. Tips & Warnings ISO files are containers representing what could be considered a virtual copy of the disk in its entirety. Most sites that provide boot CDs provide them in ISO format, because it is the standard option for disk copy in CD and DVD authoring applications. If you need to make an ISO from a CD you already have, you can do so using programs like MagicISO or Nero. MagicISO is completely free, while Nero allows a free trial before purchase. Confirm that this is the proper drive letter for your flash drive. UNetbootin does not double-check that this drive is not your computer's hard drive. It will overwrite any data on the selected drive.
