How to Use USB Keys As Raid Drives Using flash drives -- or "USB keys" since they are often on a key ring -- as part of a RAID array is possible in the same way that one might use standard hard drives in a RAID array. RAID stands for "redundant array of inexpensive disks." It is a method most commonly used to make automatic backup copies of files by making one disk make an exact copy of a second disk simultaneously. RAID can also be used to "span" disks, allowing two to operate like they were one larger disk. Both features are available in Windows 7. Instructions 1 Attach your USB drives to your computer. Click "Take no action." Click the "Start" button and click "Computer." Note the drive letters for your two USB keys/drives. 2 Click the "Start" button, and then right-click "Computer." Select "Manage." Click "Storage" and then "Disk Management." You will be asked if you are certain that you want to continue and you will be told that this process will create a single drive which is "mirrored," in essence allowing your two USB drives to copy each other exactly. Click "Yes." The new RAID drive is created. Tips & Warnings If you would like to create a "spanned" drive, where more than one drive is combined into one giant drive, select "New Striped drive" in step 4, and then continue as in the instructions. Instead of being told you are creating a mirrored drive, you will be told you are creating a striped drive, but the experience is exactly the same. You can also choose "New Spanned drive," which is safer regarding data integrity, but will give you poorer performance. Never unplug one of your USB keys while the computer is on. Be sure that you plug both of them in before turning the computer on if you remove them when the computer is off. Failure to do so may cause your RAID drive to fail (though your data should be safe). Note that your USB drives will both be erased during this process. How Does a USB Drive Work?

USB drives come in a variety of styles and sizes. They give you the ability to expand the capacity of your computer to store additional files, backup existing files or transfer files easily between computers. Smaller drives are powered exclusively by the USB port, but some require an external power adapter to function. Many use solid state technology, such as jump drives, while others are external magnetic hard drives. One of the greatest benefits of USB drives is that they are completely plug and play. They do not require an additional driver installation, unless you are using an unsupported operating system, such as older versions of Windows and certain Linux distributions. Reading the Drive While the storage method of the drives may vary, your computer uses the same process to retrieve data from all USB drives. When you plug in your USB drive, the driver that supports it instructs the USB port to query the drive. This sends a command to the drive to perform a read request. The file system, or the layout of the files on the drive, is read and returned to the computer through the USB port. The driver interprets this information and forwards it to the rest of the computer for use by programs. Retrieving Data When you open a specific file, the same read process is initiated. All hard drives are sectioned into memory locations for file retrieval. Since the computer already knows the layout of the USB drive, the program can send the specific file location to the USB port. The port then requests that location from the USB drive, which performs another read request and returns the contents of the file in binary, a series of 1s and 0s which represents the file's contents. The binary data is returned to the USB port, interpreted by the driver and sent to the program for output on your screen. Writing a File The process for writing data is very similar to the process for reading data. Rather than sending a request for a certain location, the program that is writing the file will convert it to binary. This binary data is then sent to the USB port, which forwards it to the drive to be written.
