How to Become a MA Certified HIV Test Counselor

In most states, you must be certified to work as an HIV test counselor. You are required to hold a state license, either as a marriage and family therapist, licensed social worker or in some other field of psychology or counseling. You need a Master's (MA) degree to qualify for licensure in most states. Start by getting your MA degree to become a certified HIV test counselor and then apply for licensing. After licensing, take the necessary final steps to specialize in HIV testing.

Take the HIV basic class at your local American Red Cross office. The class covers information about the transmission and prevention of HIV. Contact your local American Red Cross office for class times.

Find a community college or college in your area that offers continuing education units in HIV test counseling. You will usually receive a certificate after finishing the program.


3.Check with local clinics to see if they offer a HIV testing counselor certification program. They will provide the classes and internship opportunities. These are usually community clinics in low-income areas or government-funded facilities. In exchange, you agree to work for the clinic or volunteer a certain amount of community service hours after completing the program.

Do an internship at a facility that has HIV test counseling while you're taking any continuing education classes. In some cases, an internship is required before you can be certified. In any case, do the internship for your own benefit.
